Death of a Mad Hatter WORLD TOUR December 1st-21st!

Blurb:
If the king loses his head, then the Queen with a Bleeding Heart would rule the Red Court until Time ceased to move forward. When a second carried on for infinity, every creature in Wonderland would tip their Hat to the misfit girl with a Boy’s name (or was it a boy with a Girl’s name?) who’d end the Reign of Terror. However, it all hinged on the One-Eyed Hare being able to convince an uninspirable Heir that the impossible was indeed possible—like stopping time—and that Love was worth a Beheading.
Heads would Roll…Hearts would Break…In the end, would it matter who Reigned?

Excerpt:

Words escape me in the presence of your beauty.”
She pretended to be mad. She even put her hands on her hips and scowled, which made her more attractive. There was no denying Alice Mae’s magnificence. She could compete with models in natural beauty, but it wouldn’t be a competition when considering her quirky personality. She wasn’t definable. She was complicated. She had so many different levels, uncharted territory, to her. She was a mystery, and I wanted to spend all eternity trying to solve her, if I wasn’t fighting with her.
Obviously I couldn’t say that. No one ever wants something (or someone) if it’s too easy to take. So I added, “You’re even more attractive when you pout.”
I’m not pouting,” she insisted, even though her bottom lip stuck out enough for me to struggle to keep my thoughts straight.
Then tell me what word you’d use to describe what you’re doing to me,” I said, stepping closer to the only girl in the world who could pull off wearing a combination wrestler’s and football player’s uniform and be so damn provocative.
I’m just being playful.” The look in her eyes was anything but innocent.
Playful?” I closed the distance between us. “I think you need to check out a thesaurus from the library because playful isn’t the word I’d use.”
I pressed my finger against her shoulder pads. I traced my finger down until it fell off the pads. The spandex wrestling uniform accentuated the perfect formed lines of her stomach. I let my finger drift lower until I traced her hip that protruded slightly.
What word would you use?”
Inviting.” I lifted her chin. I bent forward so my nose traced her cheek. “You are being rather inviting.” With my other hand, I tugged on the thin spandex that covered her stomach. “And I want to accept your invitation.”
Ryley, I’m not the kind of a girl who just sends out all sorts of invitations without...”
You’re not the kind of girl who falls in love?”
She pulled away. “It would be tragic if I fell in love.”
I let my hands fall by my side. “Would it be tragic to fall in love, period—or just with me?”

Author Bio: I specialize in dark, paranormal romance – think “happy ever after” but with a twisted, dark chocolate center. Real-life romance isn't only filled with hugs, kisses, unicorns, and rainbows. True-love can be more thoroughly described in times of darkness and tribulation. It’s in those harsh moments where you see what a person is truly capable of – both the good and bad. Sometimes prince-charming isn't always on time, and the glass slipper is a little snug. However, it doesn't mean Charming is not Mr. Right, and who says every shoe is the perfect fit?

Death of the Mad Hatter by Sarah J. Pepper

Death of the Mad Hatter
Read in: November, 2013
Format: eBook
Source: Author
Star Rating: 3 1/2

Synopsis: from Goodreads.com
The Jack prophesied: If the king loses his head, then the Queen with a Bleeding Heart would rule the Red Court until Time ceased to move forward.

Heads would Roll…
Hearts would Break…
In the end, would it matter who Reigned?

Prosecution:
That half a star is really bugging me. But I couldn't give it another .5... The story was good, plot line has a TON of potential, but the execution left me kind of high and dry. You don't really know what the deal is until you're almost done with the novel and you all know my aversion to those kind of books.

Defense:
While I would have preferred Alice Mae to pick up the fricken pace, the plot line was just so cool! It was like I had stepped into a deeper, darker Wonderland. Everything was not as it seems and so many twists and turns and shocks. The creativity that was put into the novel is something to be said for and really made this retelling stand out. A few memorable tidbits was the candy they used to stay sane! I never would have thought of that and it definitely added a bit of pizazz to the plot. Since we already went through the nonsense of not really understanding the better part of the novel, the sequel should be a breeze to go through.

Verdict:
3.5.. I would love to give it another half of a point, but it did move kind of slow and I was half way into the novel before I really got sucked in to the plot line. It's a great winter read that's a nice little vacation from New Adult novels with a dash of creativity and ahem, an actual thought out plot line, but still with some romance and if you're really into fantasy retellings, I'm sure this is the novel for you. But here's the question: Does it matter who Reigns?

Changes (Family Portrait Vol. 1) by Gillian Felix

Changes (Family Portrait, Vol. 1)
Read in: November, 2013
Format: eBook
Source: Author
Star Rating: 3

Synopsis: (from Goodreads.com)
Adriana Banovic’s 15th birthday sucked! She got fired after eight years of playing Shayanne Montgomery on the #1 soap in the country, found out that her family was on the verge of bankruptcy and worst of all, forced to return to Westwood Academy. Her only saving grace was a chance glance at dreamy mystery boy Haze Lyndon. Armed with only his picture and a determination to find him—even if it means turning Los Angeles over on its ass.

In this young adult novel, you’ll meet Robin Banovic, Adriana’s father; financially challenged, dealing with the death of a family member and his brother’s disappearance. You’ll meet Savannah DaCosta aka Savi, mother/manager; Savi enjoys the life her rock star daughter Leighann has provided. When Leighann makes a choice to end her career, Savi sees it as a personal attack. You’ll meet college boy Haze Lyndon; New to Los Angeles, Haze soon realizes how quickly money changes hands in the City of Angels. Will he return to questionable ways to survive or go back to the safety of his family in Wisconsin?

Prosecution:
Honestly, I wish each of the stories had been broken up into a book each, with a little bit of a new tidbit about each story instead of having all the stories together and jumbled together. It was a little confusing having to keep track of each different character and past and how they each relate to one another.

Defense:
While each story was a little different each, I love love love the characters. Each one has its own secrets and different personalities and downfalls.

Verdict:
It was ok. I will most definitely be reading the second book, just because I HAVE to know what happens. I hope for more character interaction and development.

Much Ado About Nothing (Shakespeare for Everyone Else) by C.E. Wilson

Much Ado About Nothing (Shakespeare for Everyone Else, # 1)
Read in: November, 2013
Format: Kindle eBook
Source: Author
Star Rating: 3
Buy Here
Synopsis: (from Goodreads.com)
Shakespeare’s work features some of the most memorable stories and characters ever created, yet for too many curious readers the combination of ultra-dense dialogue and unfamiliar historical settings make tackling the Bard’s work something between a tedious chore and a confusing mess of bird-bolts and quondam carpet-mongers.

While it’s nearly impossible to replicate or improve on these works, it is (thanks to their timeless nature) possible to make them more accessible to a wider audience.
In this Young Adult retelling of one of William Shakespeare’s most iconic plays, join C.E. Wilson as she breathes new life into Much Ado About Nothing, the first in her series
Shakespeare for Everyone Else.

Two couples.

Clark and Heaven.

Beatriz and Bennett.

After years of friendship Clark decides that his senior year is the time to finally profess his love to his long-time crush Heaven; a sweet and simple girl who her father knows to be loyal, trustworthy and caring. She returns Clark’s love because, like him, she has also seen her feelings blossom over time. Theirs is a cute love that differs a bit from the other couple in the play.

Beatriz and Bennett at first glance seem to want nothing to do with the other. Every conversation, every remark is a withering attack which reveals their lost history and similarities. It’s not long before their friends hatch a plan to set them up because everyone is convinced they still love and care for one another. Will either of them be able to resist the strong attraction between them?
As these two couples try to make it through their senior year, their friend Donnie does what he can to keep the group happy. The problem lies in Donnie’s half-brother Jason who wants nothing more than to spoil the fun – even at the cost of Heaven’s reputation.

When both couples are pushed to the limits, whose love will endure?

Find out in this modern retelling of Shakespeare’s memorable play Much Ado About Nothing.

Prosecution:
As with most everything Shakespeare...you really could have avoided most the issues. As an avid Shakespeare reader, I have to say, this jump to the modern retelling is something I'll need to get used to.

Defense:
WHOA! BENNEEETTTTEEE! I could've used a little more character developement on him (but really, how much do you have to work with on retellings?) but I could tell from the very beginning, he is the bad boy all in one great package. I love love love Bennett.
Heaven was the usual good girl with Clark as her naive yet lovable love interest.
Donnie was the third (fifth?) wheel. We all have one.
Jason and his little were the cookie cutter villains, however, I do admire their scheme.

Verdict:
This Shakespeare retelling is most definitely worth the money as a quick winter read curled up next to the fire. The plot is interesting enough and it moved itself along pretty quickly.
Bonus, the book is cut up into Acts, just like the play!

Book Blitz: Changes (Family Portrait Vol. 1) by Gillian Felix

Tour-banner-Vol-1.jpg

(Review to Come!)

Synopsis:
Adriana Banovic’s 15th birthday sucked! She got fired after eight years of playing Shayanne Montgomery on the #1 soap in the country, found out that her family was on the verge of bankruptcy and worst of all, forced to return to Westwood Academy. Her only saving grace was a chance glance at dreamy mystery boy Haze Lyndon. Armed with only his picture and a determination to find him—even if it means turning Los Angeles over on its ass.

cover.jpgIn this new adult novel you'll meet Robin Banovic, Adriana's father; financially challenged, dealing with the death of a family member and his brother's disappearance. You'll meet Savannah DaCosta aka Savi, mother/manager; Savi enjoys the life her rock star daughter Leighann has provided. When Leighann makes a choice to end her career, Savi sees it as a personal attack. You'll meet college boy Haze Lyndon; New to Los Angeles, Haze soon realizes how quickly money changes hands in the City of Angels. Will he return to questionable ways to survive or go back to the safety of his family in Wisconsin?

This novel is NOT for children, it contains strong language, reference to drug use and sexual situations, this novel is meant for mature teens and adults.

Fun facts about Changes Vol. 1, (Family Portrait)

Writing Adriana’s character was fun and challenging because she is such a minx. It’s tricky because she shares the leading role with Leighann, who is sweet, and kind—they are polar opposites of each other. They both grew up in the entertainment industry but that’s about all they have in common. Adriana makes no apologies for who she is, she is reckless and wild and I’m sure some readers will hate her. It is only later on in the series you get to really see why she is the way she is.

Even though Leighann was a bigger star than Adriana, she was more protected by her mother. Savi may have her ways, but she shielded Leighann from a lot of the outside world. So when Leighann defies her and ventures out into the ‘real world’, she begins to see how scary things can get.

Leighann’s fascination with the ‘real world’ is based on the fact that she has never had a ‘normal’ life. She sits in the tour bus and looks at the fans through the one way glass and thinks that their life is so easy, and she longs for that. She wants to meet a boy, go to the movies, and do things normal teenagers do.

Westwood Academy of Higher Learning is a super school on steroids as one reviewer described it: “we mustn't forget the whole larger-than-life high school scene on steroids in a world where appearances often mean more than substance”
The school is high tech and ridiculously over the top with chef catered lunches, marble floors, digital lockers, Jacuzzi. Seriously, I’d want to go to that school. How does any body get any studying done?

Astrid Wilson is the Kim Kardashian of Westwood Academy. She decks out in Prada and all the latest designs by the hottest designers. No body can throw a hissy fit like Astrid. When Adriana returns to Westwood Academy, Astrid’s status is threatened especially where her boyfriend Warren is concerned.

Family Portrait is based on a television series I had written. The script got lots of interest in Hollywood but nothing came of it, so I decided to turn it into a book series. I have two seasons, 24 episodes of the television series already written.

Book two combines a couple episodes from the script. Changes Vol. 1 is equivalent to the pilot episode—it introduces the audience to the characters. The script for television was meant for prime time so I had to tone it down—a lot. The book is the raw version—drug use, foul language, sexual situations. The characters can get away with a lot more in the book than they could on screen, which is good for Adriana and her brother, Kevin’s character, because later in the series they really get naughty.

Right now I am working on Vol. 2 called The Banovic Siblings. In this book the siblings mostly Adriana and Kevin’s past catches up with them and their secrets are getting too close to home. Love triangles and tangles start to form with some of the supporting characters. Leighann’s character starts evolving, her sister L’Wren has a very powerful and emotional storyline which took a lot out of me to write. It really made me ‘go there’ which stretches me as a writer. Book two is a bit darker than Changes.

I think Vol. 2 may be available in November or December, 2013. It still has the whole process to go through with the story editor, the proofreader and the cover still has to be designed. I usually write like a fiend at night—Sunday through Thursday sometimes Friday nights.

On the Facebook fan page https://www.facebook.com/FamilyPortraitNovels fans can rummage through the character’s closets. Right now there is an app on there called Adriana’s closet and coming soon: Leighann’s wardrobe, Astrid’s locker, the sound track to go with some of the scenes, Westwood Academy emblem reveal, Westwood Academy gear, fun trivia’s, first read of the novels before they are published. So sign up.

Thanks for having me. Purchase a copy of Changes Vol. 1 (Family Portrait) here. (: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EADYMCA)

The reviews on Amazon:
Each character has a story to tell, and I see their stories being entwined together, for better or worse as author Gillian Felix builds a strong and intriguing foundation for a new series with her novella, Changes, book 1 in the Family Portrait series.

Part soap opera, part teen struggle in a world where they are expected to “follow the crowd” and feed the frenzied tabloids fodder for the prying eyes of the masses, all while dealing with personal and family crises, I see a huge following for this new series! I know I’m going to watch for more!”

So many drugs, schemes, and much more. One girl just wants to be normal. One girl just wants the limelight. Selfish motives abound and changes are coming for everyone. It's Hollywood....”

This book has many interesting characters and I am looking forward to the next volume. I was sorry to see it end.”

EXCLUSIVE CONTENT: PROM SCENE, LEVI'S POV!!

The Georgia Corbins is a heart wrenching YA contemporary told from three characters. Ali, the heroine and two brothers, Levi and Tucker. We hope you enjoy this pivotal scene retold from Levi’s point of view.

Levi Corbin

The sound of Cotton Eyed Joe filled the gym. Cass and Kayla both shrieked and tried to pull Ali onto the dance floor. She yanked out of their hands and sauntered up to me. She plucked my cowboy hat from my head and put it on her own before winking at me. I couldn’t help but smile as she joined Cass and Kayla on the dance floor. I’d always enjoyed looking at Ali and watching her, but damn, watching her dance, watching her hips shake, and the smile on her face – it was surreal. She was absolutely gorgeous, and I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. I didn’t know about the other guys, but I definitely enjoyed the show. When the song ended, I grabbed Ali around the waist and spun her around. She laughed and tried to put my hat back on my head.
No,” he said. “It looks better on you.”
I do look sexy, don’t I?” she asked, striking a stupid pose.
I laughed. Her pose was silly, but she could wear a potato sack and look sexy. “You have no idea,” I said, pulling her into my arms again. Her blue eyes twinkled in that way they did when she was happy, and my desire for her tripled. I couldn’t imagine a future without her in it, without the ability to do what I was doing right now: holding her in my arms, looking into her eyes, just being with her.
Thanks, but it doesn’t really match my dress. Plus, I really like how you look wearing it.” She put it back on my head.
Really?” I cocked a brow and slowly brought my mouth to hers.
Before I could kiss her, my brother interrupted. “I reckon I’ll take you up on that dance now,” Tucker said.
I smiled tightly and reluctantly released Ali. Of course Tucker would chose right now to want to dance with Ali. It was hard not to scowl at him or make a snide comment, but I’d promised Ali that tonight would be like old times, that for her sake, Tucker and I would get along. And I was not going to be the one to break that promise to her. So, I stood off to the side and watched as my brother danced with Ali.
I noticed the way he put his hands on Ali’s waist and how she responded by putting her arms around his neck. Tucker said something, and then Ali laughed. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t stop the jealousy I felt building in my gut. I didn’t like seeing her with him. I didn’t like knowing he could make her smile and laugh like that.
You stare any harder and they’re going to have holes in their backs,” Kayla said.
I glanced at her and smiled. “Can’t help it.” I shrugged and averted my gaze back to Ali and Tucker just in time to see him lean down and kiss Ali’s cheek. I forced myself to take several deep breaths. At least he didn’t kiss her on the lips.
You and Ali look really good together,” Kayla said.
I knew she was trying to distract me, and I was thankful for that. “Thanks. You and Tucker don’t look so bad either.”
Kayla laughed. “That’s real nice, Levi.”
Okay, you look beautiful, and next to you, Tucker doesn’t look all that bad. Is that better?”
She rolled her eyes, but smiled. “You really know how to flatter a girl, don’t you?”
I laughed and bumped her shoulder with mine. “There’s only one girl I want to flatter.”
Yeah, yeah, I know. You better go get her,” Kayla said as the song came to an end.
I winked and made my way toward Ali. I pulled her out of Tucker’s arms and into mine. “My turn.”
Ali glanced at Tucker and gave him a small smile. Despite his best efforts to do otherwise, I caught him sulking off to the other side of the gym. I knew how he felt, but in all fairness, Ali was my date. Toby Keith’s You Shouldn’t Kiss Me Like This played. Ali looked back at me. This was one of her favorite songs. Talk about a perfect moment. I held her close and brought my lips to her mouth, kissing her softly, kissing her like it’d be the last time I’d ever have the chance, which could very well be the case. Ali threaded her fingers in my hair. I loved it when she did that. It always sent shivers through my body.
She moaned so softly I felt it before I heard it. In that moment I knew, there was something different about this kiss, something special and unique. I released her lips and we stopped moving. I looked down at her, and she up at me, and the emotion I saw in her eyes stole my breath. There was no denying it, and there was no confusion as to what I saw. It was the same emotion I felt right then – love.
Levi,” Ali whispered, running her thumb over my lips.
I closed my eyes and kissed her finger, not wanting the moment to end, not wanting the feelings to evaporate. We started dancing again, and I put my mouth to her ear and sang the lyrics of the song. I knew that she knew the song, but I needed her to know that the words in it expressed exactly how I felt. And then, at the exact right moment, she took my face into her hands and kissed me. We stood there for what felt like hours, just holding onto each other and kissing. I never wanted to let her go. Even when the music stopped, we still stood there, not moving except for our mouths and tongues playing with each other.
Ali.” I took a deep breath. What the heck had just happened? Was it possible? Did Ali just tell me she loved me without saying the words? It sure as hell felt like it. She held my gaze as we both tried to figure out what the other was thinking. I put my palm on her cheek, and she leaned into me, closing her eyes. It was on the tip of my tongue to say it, to just tell her how I felt, to tell her that I loved her and I didn’t ever want to be without her.
But before I had the chance, Cass said, “Can I borrow Ali for a minute?” And then she dragged Ali away from me.
And just like that, the moment was ruined. I stood, staring dumbfounded as Ali left the gym with Cass. Kayla followed behind them. I put my hands on my knees and bent over, trying to catch my breath and gather my thoughts. I’d never felt anything so intense in my life.
Hey, you all right man?” Jimmie Allen asked, patting me on the back.
I straightened. “Yeah, I’m okay. It’s just a little warm in here, don’t ya think?” I nervously fidgeted with my tie in an attempt to loosen it.
I don’t think your body temperature has anything to do with how hot it is in the gym.” Jimmie Allen laughed.
I groaned. If he’d seen what just happened between me and Ali, then chances were good that Tucker had, too. I glanced around the gym looking for him, but I didn’t see him anywhere. Thank goodness for small miracles. A moment later, Ali and the girls returned. She still looked a little flustered, but she appeared to be handling it better than I was. Had I misread what happened? Did I only see what I wanted to see? Did I just imagine that look I’d seen in her eyes? That emotion I’d felt in her kiss?
I know what we should do,” Kayla said, clapping her hands. “All of us should go have a picture taken together. It’ll be fun!”
Shouldn’t we wait for Tucker?” I asked.
Kayla gave me a strange look. “Tucker’s right there.” She pointed to the door in the corner.
Where the heck did he come from? I swore a second ago he hadn’t been there.
Once Tucker rejoined us, everyone agreed and we made our way toward the photographer. It was hard to fit all eight of us into the shot, but we managed with some creative posing. Tucker and I stood in the back with Kayla and Ali in front of us. Brody and Jimmie Allen kneeled on the floor while Cass and Shelby sat on their knees. Just as the photographer snapped the picture, Cass and Shelby each lifted a leg and crossed them in the air. Kayla wasn’t too pleased that they’d “ruined” the picture, but Ali thought it was funny.
After the picture, I took her hand and led her toward the punch table in the hallway. I poured her a cup, and then got myself one. We stood in silence for a moment, both of us sipping at our punch. Then I just couldn’t stand it any longer. I had to know. “What happened in there, Ali?” I asked.
She met my gaze, and it looked like she wanted to say something, something that could potentially change things between us forever. But, finally, she simply said, “Can’t we just enjoy it?”
I don’t know.” I set my cup on the table, and then took hers and did the same. “Can we do it again?”
Her laughter died as I slid my arms around her waist and pulled her close. She licked my lips. “We can try.” Her voice was a breathless whisper that set my insides on fire.
I smiled. “Next time I kiss you like that, it’ll be when we’re alone.” I wanted there to be no mistake about how I felt, and I was determined that next time we shared a moment like that, it would be when we could explore it – fully and without interruption.
Come on, let’s go dance some more,” she said, taking my hand and pulling me back into the gym.

A Castle of Sand by Bella Forrest (A Shade of Vampire #3)

A Castle of Sand (A Shade of Vampire, #3)
Read in: July, 2013
Format: eBook
Source: Author
Star Rating: 4
The Author sent me a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This has in no way altered my opinion of the novel or the following review.

Synopsis:
Sofia has never been this endangered, especially with Gregor Novak back in town and with the rumors that Borys Maslen's baby vampire could be..her mother. Not to mention, her year is up and she has two choices, become a vampire or live in the Catacombs with the rest of the humans on the island. With her sand castle being threatened by the rising tide, will Sofia be able to save her life, retain Derek's love, and eventually rebuild?

Prosecution:
Oh, Sofia Sofia Sofia. Sweetheart, please stop with the "Does he love me? Yes, of course. Wait, no. Well duh yes.. Oh wait nope, definitely not, nope." You've been doing this for three novels now, he's still around, he cares, he likes you, its pretty obvious, move on to a new problem. Its not like you don't have a million to choose from!

Defense:
Once again, we are all shocked by the turn of events. When starting the novel, I was kind of like, well where could this possibly be going? I'm ready for the action, bring on the drama, let it all hit the fan! Well, let me tell you what, it delivers about mid way through. Just hang it tight though. While this wasn't my favorite, it definitely had the most suspenseful ending, like hello, slap in the face, I for sure didn't see it coming. (Although it did crush my little dream of them being together forever. :c) But now I need to know how they solve this little problem!!!

Verdict:
Four stars. Not my favorite, but I freaking love this series. I need need need to know what happens next.

Day 2, Day 3, and Day 4: Book Blogger Challenge!

Blogger Challenge Teaser

So as much as I love challenges, I do admit that I can get kind of sidetracked and well, forget about them. So today, I'm playing catch up!

Day 2: What's your bedtime reading schedule?
Usually, it starts around 10. I get cozy, flip my light on, and grab my iPad or the current paper back I'm glued to and snuggle down. I turn my phone on silent and avoid any text message for about an hour to an hour and a half. Reading helps me unwind and calm my mind before going to sleep.

Day 3: Who are your blogging BFFs?
I don't really have any! So I'll go ahead and talk about a couple that I've had the pleasure of a conversation with!

  1. Harman  @ Little Bookworm Reviews:  She's my co-mod at Teen Romance at Goodreads, and I love love love her blog. From the theme to the writing style, she's definitely my blogging idol.
  2. Laetitia @ Flurried Thoughts Called Book Reviews: She's a total sweetheart with a knack for reviewing. I've interviewed her here
Day 4: What's the last book you flung across the room? (hey look, we've caught up!)
Oh man, definitely Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I've noticed its either a you love it or you hate it kind of book and unfortunately, I fall into the latter. You can read my review of this detestable not so good novel here. But the long story short is, I felt it was majorly lacking and the girl, Hannah, was ridiculous on so many levels. Teen suicide, depression, and anxiety are all extremely real problems and I felt the book was just a mockery of these issues.

Blogger Challenge Teaser

So the lovely lady over at goodbooksandgoodwine.com has come out with the most fun blogger challenge!
If some of you follow my personal tumblr, you all know I never pass up a moment to talk about myself or participate in a new challenge! (if you don't, feel free to check me out! drop-4nchor.tumblr.com)
So, here's the line up..

Day 1: Make 15 Book Related Confessions
(because we all need to get a few things off of our chests)

  1. My family read The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss to me so many times, I memorized it. When people would come over, I'd "read" them the book, cover to cover, and be this amazing reading three year old.
  2. I actually really liked the Twilight series and still read all four of them every Christmas break.
  3. It makes me really sad that my boyfriend doesn't like to read but he'll still go to book stores and libraries with me. c:
  4. I judge books by their covers, sorry not sorry.
  5. Lately, I've had a hard time sitting down and reading a book.
  6. Its been a while since a book has seriously stuck with me and made me think about it.
  7. I like to review, but I'm so lazy with it.
  8. I prefer second hand books instead of new ones, they have more history and tell more of a story.
  9. I keep downloading these free ebooks that just keep stacking up.
  10. My dropbox is my prized possession because it houses so many ebooks right now.
  11. I can think of only two friends who share my love of reading, but only one who loves ebooks as much as I do.
  12. I live right down the road from a library, but rarely go. (probably because of that huge fine I have?!!?)
  13. I have a bad habit of not returning books, but that really bites me in the butt thanks to fines.
  14. I prefer to listen to music while reading.(yay for Pandora for iPad!!)
  15. The number one book that I could read forever would be either My Red Shoes by Liana Merrill or any book by Haywood Smith(I love any book set in the South!)
Well, see you tomorrow, comment down below with a link to your own Book Confessions!
Ali. ♥

To Sin With a Viking by Michelle Willingham

To Sin with a Viking (Forbidden Vikings, #1)
Read in: July, 2013
Format: eBook
Source: Netgalley.com
Star Rating: 3
Netgalley sent me an ARC of the novel to review and offer my own opinion and honest review. My review can be used for press and will be sent off to the publishing house.

Synopsis:
Styr, a Viking, is ambushed when he sets foot onto land and is taken captive by none other than Caragh o'Brannen while his wife, ship and crew are taken hostage by her younger brother, Branden. Styr will teach Caragh to fish, hunt for crabs, and eventually, to love again.

Prosecution:
Better cover art, Harlequin, but when a big issue was arising, I wasn't as attached to it as I would've liked. I would rather skim through the issue and get to a better part. The whole "forbidden love" thing between Caragh and Styr was off-putting, especially since its because she's the other woman and they develop these feelings for one another. Cheating just really doesn't sit well with me.

Defense:
Well, glad to see there was a slight variation in the usual she gets into trouble, the hero saves her while still resisting the urge to fall in love, and then they live happily ever after. I admit, these two do live happily ever after but with a few bumps in the road beforehand.

Verdict:
Another three stars. The slight variation from the regular pattern that Harlequin follows gave it an extra point, but I just can't seem to get into the idea of Caragh taking Styr from his wife. Yeah, they weren't in love, but h should have never even initiated any kind of contact, no matter how "in love" he was falling with her.

Lost to the Desert Warrior by Sarah Morgan

Lost to the Desert Warrior
Read in: July, 2012
Format: eBook
Source: Netgalley.com
Star Rating: 3
Netgalley sent me an ARC of the novel to review and offer my own opinion and honest review. My review can be used for press and will be sent off to the publishing house.

Synopsis:
Layla, princess of Tazkhan, is running for her life from an arranged marriage to her hateful fathers successor. Sheikh Raz Al Zahki is the rightful air to the throne and wants nothing more than to bring down Layla's betrothed..even if it means marrying her himself. Over the next two weeks, you'll watch these two learn to trust one another, face more than a few dangerous situations, and eventually, fall in love.

Prosecution:
That cover has so little imagination, it was probably slapped together within 20 minutes. Harlequin, I thought you were trying to revamp your look?? More than a few anachronism's in Layla's speech were out there, especially with how sheltered she was supposed to be.

Defense:
As much as that cover sucks, we all know this is the reason we read Harlequin romance novels. So we can read about a ridiculous setting, the heroine and hero fall in love, they go through a few hurdles, the heroine distances herself because she "feels as though he'll never love her", blah blah blah. At least, this is why I keep coming back. Something new with this heroine, I actually really liked her! Layla was sensible, brave, and caring. She had her annoying qualities, but those really didn't make an appearance. Her smart thinking and overcoming her fears really saved the day. It felt kind of like an Aesop tale..except not for kids.

Verdict:
Shaky three. I enjoy Harlequin but this novel is like the 14,000 other harlequins out there. No real pizazz but I'd like to see what happens with Yasmin and Salem!

Guest Post: The Inspiration for The Georgia Corbins and Death of a Waterfall By Kara Leigh Miller

THE GEORGIA CORBINS:
My husband had turned on one of those all music all the time channels on cable. I don’t remember what song was playing, but there was a still photograph of a tractor in the middle of a hay field with a man leaning up against it and a women staring at him. As it often does, my mind began to wander and I started asking questions. Why was the man in the field? What’s with the tractor? Why was the woman watching him? Did they know each other? Were they lovers? Friends? Family? What were they doing? Talking? Having an argument? Breaking-up? The longer I stared at that picture, the more questions I had. And I knew there was only one way to get all the answers…I had to tell a story.
But, where the heck did I begin?
Well, I let that picture and my questions have free reign in my brain for the rest of the night, and just as I was getting ready to fall asleep, a scene started to play in my head: a young girl sitting on the roof of her house, staring out across a hay field, watching two shirtless guys loading hay onto a wagon. She was sad, confused, angry, and in love. I knew I'd found my story.
The characters themselves—Ali, Levi, and Tucker—weren't inspired by anyone I know personally. Shelby Blake, the girl who bullies Ali, was loosely based on a girl I knew in high school. Sometimes we were friends, sometimes we weren't, and there were occasions where she threatened me. She really made my life hell at times. Lol.
The town of Haldeen is based very closely on my own hometown of Mexico, New York.

DEATH OF A WATERFALL
The inspiration for this story is a little harder to pinpoint. This was the first story I had ever written. I had the names Teghan and Donnie in my mind, I knew they were going to fall in love, and she was going to get pregnant. But that's all I knew. I literally just sat down one day and started to type. In the original version, I had them in high school. Then I re-wrote it to make them in college. Then I re-wrote it again to make them older. Then I went back to having them in college. After I finally got all of that worked out I started sending it to a friend of mine, who gave me a lot of great suggestions and this story was born.

Certain aspects of Teghan's character (like being a people pleaser) is all me. Teghan's best friend, Annabelle, is so much like my own best friend it's a little scary. Lol. I didn't do it intentionally, but once I read the story from beginning to end, I noticed it. Alex, Teghan's ex, was inspired by one of my very first boyfriends. And the setting of Hayden Falls and the campus, Hayden Falls University was modeled on SUNY Oswego located in Oswego, NY.
